Description

Under the direction of a Special Education administrator and supervision of a School Psychologist, provide direct services for assigned schools; assist in the intervention process as a member of the Student Support Team; perform individual psychological observations, evaluations and assessments of referred students; explain the results of these evaluations to parents, teachers and students, when appropriate; provide consultation to educational staff regarding behavioral issues; and perform other related work as required. This work will be in conjunction with completing the required internship, aligned with National Associate of School Psychologists (NASP) guidelines and allows for a comprehensive experience in multiple school settings and practice domains, in alignment with university course and graduation requirements.

  • WORK YEAR & WORK HOURS:   Interns are expected to work all school days on the 180-day student year calendar, working 7 hours/day with daily start/end times aligned to the school schedule assigned.   High School: 7:30 - 3:00 daily; Middle School: 8:30 - 4:00; and Elementary: 8:00 - 3:30; all inclusive of a 1/2-hour duty free unpaid lunch.   There may be hours into the afternoon required for IEP meetings, etc as approved by the Special Education Coordinator.  
  • Hours are turned in as you work them with monthly pay September through June for hours turned in.  This role is anticipated to work 180 days X 7 hours which qualifies for SEBB benefits September - August.
  • Interns will accrue Washington State I-1433 sick leave at the rate of 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.

Responsibilities

  1. Conduct multi-method and multi-source psychoeducational evaluations and reevaluations as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  2. Utilize professional standards for writing reports of evaluation results.
  3. Interpret and explain assessment results in a format understood by educators and parents while providing relevant recommendations, strategies and resources based on results.
  4. Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and actively participate as a member of the team.
  5. Collaborate with teachers and parents to find effective solutions to learning and behavior problems.
  6. Work directly and/or indirectly with students, teachers, and parents to help resolve problems in behavior and learning.
  7. Utilize knowledge of behavioral principles to develop and assist in the implementation of specific behavioral management plans for individual students, classrooms and schools.
  8. Strengthen working relationships between educators, parents, and community services and help others understand child development and how it affects learning and behavior.
  9. Develop appropriate interventions and strategies to assist individual students in academic growth and school adjustment.
  10. Provide training and assistance in intervention techniques and strategies designed to improve student success in the school setting.
  11. Evaluate the effectiveness of academic intervention programs and behavior management programs.
  12. Use evidence-based research to develop and/or recommend effective interventions.
  13. Apply ethical standards of professional practice to the delivery of school psychological services.
  14. Observe state laws and district policies/procedures to govern practice.
  15. Participate in professional growth and development activities to continually improve professional knowledge and skills.

Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed. 
  2. Completion of an accredited School Psychology Program with only the internship requirement      remaining.
  3. Ability to understand the procedures and function in a school system with regard to the role special education plays in the overall education of the student.
  4. Experience working with in the public school system. Understanding and knowledge of what intervention services are accessible.
  5. Experience working with data to guide decision making for best intervention/support strategies. 
  6. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with parents, students and staff verbally and in writing.
  7. Demonstrated ability to interact positively and in a professional manner with a diverse group of students, parents, staff, and community members in a confidential manner.
  8. Evidence of continuous professional learning and a commitment to participate in professional growth opportunities and self-reflection on professional practice.
  9. Experience intervention development, implementation, and/or evaluation.
  10. Ability to relate positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and special needs.
  11. Demonstrated knowledge of culturally responsive programs and activities.
  12. Experience with computers and software such as Windows, Microsoft Office, and/or special education and student management software.
