Summary

Position Summary

The Cannabis, Commercial Tobacco, and Vaping Prevention (CCTV) unit is seeking two Graduate Interns (Intern IIIs) who will share work and develop a resource library of youth curriculum, frameworks, campaigns, and other resources that approach youth substance use prevention through increasing protective factors and reducing risk factors. To develop the youth resource library, the graduate interns will assess the resources currently being used and considered by CCTV grantees, conduct a landscape analysis of potentially useful resources, and summarize the components and merits of the resources. The final product will have the goal of building capacity for Community Change Grantees and will be a resource shared with community partners.

Background
This position is based in the Cannabis, Commercial Tobacco, and Vaping Prevention (CCTV) unit of the Health Sciences Division of PHSKC. CCTV uses community-engaged approaches for prevention and the reduction of disparities in access to both harm reduction and cessation support. The CCTV Community Change Grant program partners with 22 community-based organizations working on advancing youth prevention through increasing protective factors and reducing risk factors.

The CCTV team recently received funds from a Juul Settlement that has created more opportunities to support education and programming for youth that increase protective factors and reduce risk factors. The internship will provide exposure at an exciting time and will create valuable work that will increase community grantees capacity to address youth prevention. The internship will also provide opportunities to see prevention practices in action and ways evaluation can support community engagement.

Commitment To Equity and Social Justice

Named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most influential civil rights leaders in our nation's history, King County is a vibrant international community with residents that represent countries from around the world. It is a region with increasing diversity that cherishes the traditions of many cultures.

The county government has a deep commitment to equity and social justice and advancing practices, strategies, and policies that promote fairness, justice, and opportunity for all – in our workplaces and our communities. With this commitment, King County has adopted a pro-equity agenda to advance regional change and ensure that residents from all communities are incorporated into our emergency planning and public outreach efforts.

We recognize that structural racism consists of principles and practices that cause and justify an inequitable distribution of rights, opportunities, and experiences across racial groups. Since declaring Racism is a Public Health Crisis in June 2020, King County and Public Health committed to being intentionally anti-racist and accountable to Black, Indigenous and People of Color communities.
