Title: Summer Intern

Core Purpose: Connect Alaska Native youth to community organizing opportunities, traditional knowledge and connection to the land.

Terms of Employment: Seasonal, Part-time Position (25 hours/week, includes wellness time)

Compensation: $22.46 per hour

Timeframe: May-August 2024, program length 2.5 months

Location: Fairbanks, AK

Direct Report to: Creative Space Development Manager

Summary

Native Movement is looking for Alaska Native youth for our summer interns based in Fairbanks, Alaska. This program seeks to introduce local youth to Native Movement work, participate in collaborative event planning, and deepen relationships with the community within the social justice and grassroots organizing spheres. These positions will start late May and end early August. Interns will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with Native Movement staff and build their skillset as leaders in the community. 

Program Goals

• Gain basic understanding of community organizing

• Learn about Alaska social justice movement, historical and current

• Create and sustain a meaningful relationship to the land

• Develop professional skills: event planning, public speaking, teamwork and others

Who should apply

A person who:

• is Alaska Native, between the ages of 18-22

• has an interest in Native Movement, non-profit work and social justice;

• likes working as part of a team;

• is good at or willing to develop people skills;

• is organized, timely, computer literate, can handle cash and online transactions, detail oriented

• has lived experience within Alaska Native/Indigenous communities are a plus

• is inclusive to all LGBTQIA2+ identities.

• practices self-awareness and demonstrates willingness to participate in mutual accountability.

• displays humility, respectful inquiry and genuine curiosity, and a commitment to their continued growth.

Duties may include

• Tabling/Information support

• Organize community events

• Participate in trainings and other learning opportunities

• Visit various porject sites in Fairbanks and vicinity

• Assist with merchandise: inventory, mailing, organizing, and packaging

• Assist with NM raised garden as scheduled

• Inventory and record office supplies

• Assist with storage space organization

• Prepare presentations and speak in front of a group of people.

• Work with elders and/or Native Movement Advisory Board members

• Shadow NM staff and/or advisory board members based on interests and availability

  • May include community organizing, event planning, collaboration with community partners, or other areas of interest
