The City of Missoula is seeking a Transportation Options Intern to lead an outreach campaign encouraging residents to explore biking, walking, carpooling, and public transit as alternatives to driving alone. This hands-on internship offers valuable experience in community engagement, public education, and behavior change strategies. Interns will connect with residents through targeted outreach, develop educational materials, and collaborate with local organizations to promote sustainable transportation options.

**15 hours/week for 20 weeks. 

Essential Functions

  • Plan and implement a behavior change program targeting residents near Mountain Line’s Route 10. 
  • Provide program participants with information and training on available transportation options, including biking, walking, carpooling, and riding the bus. 
  • Respond to questions about riding the bus, bicycling, and walking; refer residents and visitors to appropriate resources.
  • Develop and distribute educational materials about the urban area transportation system.
  • Perform individual outreach through targeted mailings, in person deliveries, phone calls, emails, virtual meetings, and possible door-to-door canvassing.
  • Seek out and establish relationships with potential partner organizations, including Property Managers, Neighborhood Councils, etc.
  • Record daily activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and that ability to learn the Missoula urban area transportation system.
  • Knowledge of office policies, procedures, and practices, including customer service, record management and data entry. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote department safety considerations, and City safety policies, with the ability to learn safe bicycling techniques.
  • Skill in operating office equipment, various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365, and the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment. 
  • Skill in managing multiple projects with the ability to prioritize tasks with shifting priorities and timeline demands.
  • Skill in communicating, in person, writing, and canvassing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
  • Skill in public speaking, with the ability to train and present data, reports, and other findings to a variety of diverse groups and individuals, while facilitating positive outcomes and maintaining a calm demeanor.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps.
  • Ability to independently navigate sustainable transportation network to arrive at destinations.
  • Ability to develop various education, outreach and public presentation content and other written materials. 
  • Ability to provide effective customer service, including the ability to assess needs, apply service standards and evaluate customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures, including state and municipal bicycle laws.
Working Conditions:
  • Position requires the ability to lift 30 lbs. or less.
  • Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable seasonal weather conditions, occupational hazards, and physical risks, including in high traffic areas and private residences, which require following basic safety precautions.

Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of clerical experience or another relevant field. 
  • Experience working in planning, communication, business, marketing, or event management, preferred.
