JOB TITLE: Institution Research and Data Analytics (Part-Time Intern)
REPORTS TO: Institutional Research and Data Analytics Lead
Academic Affairs (Office of Planning, Assessment, and Improvement)
CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time Intern (12 Weeks Maximum)
Location: Hybrid
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY: The Institutional Research and Data Analytics Intern will support the Institutional Research (IR) team in collecting, analyzing, documenting, and reporting institutional data to inform strategic planning, accreditation, student success initiatives, and institutional effectiveness.
In addition to analytics and reporting, this role will play a key part in strengthening data governance and documentation by helping develop and maintain a centralized data dictionary that improves transparency, consistency, and accessibility of institutional data assets.
This role is ideal for an analytical, detail-oriented individual who is interested in applied data analytics, stakeholder collaboration, and real-world reporting environments.

Collect, clean, validate, and document institutional data for internal and external reporting (e.g., IPEDS, accreditation, grant submissions).
Assist in the development and maintenance of a centralized data dictionary, including:
Documenting data elements, definitions, business rules, and usage context
Standardizing terminology across reports and dashboards
Collaborate with academic and administrative departments to:
Inventory existing reports and dashboards
Capture descriptions of metrics, data sources, and intended use
Ensure documentation is accessible through a centralized location
Develop interactive dashboards and data visualizations in Power BI to highlight key metrics such as enrollment, retention, and completion outcomes.
Write and optimize SQL queries to extract, transform, and validate data from relational databases.
Utilize Microsoft Excel for advanced data manipulation, including pivot tables, lookups, and basic scenario analysis.
Support exploratory data analysis and basic analytical tasks using Python (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, matplotlib), as appropriate.
Participate in meetings with stakeholders to gather reporting requirements and clarify data definitions.
Perform data quality checks to ensure accuracy and consistency of reported metrics.
Contribute to documentation of data processes, reporting logic, and methodologies to support institutional transparency and data governance.
Participate in regular team meetings, presentations, and preparation of research briefs or summary materials.
MINIMUM/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Power BI preferred.
Basic familiarity with SQL and relational database concepts (coursework acceptable).
Exposure to Python for data analysis is a plus but not required.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
High attention to detail with a commitment to data accuracy and integrity.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a collaborative environment.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill, and abilities.
Currently pursuing or recently completed an undergraduate or master’s degree in:
Data Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics
Computer Science, Information Systems
Economics, Business Analytics, Public Policy, Higher Education, or a related field
Knowledge of and Ability to:
Analytical thinker with strong curiosity and problem-solving ability.
Comfortable collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Organized and methodical, especially in documentation and metadata tasks.
Self-motivated with the ability to learn new tools and concepts quickly.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working with sensitive institutional data.

This position requires a flexible schedule consisting of occasional early start times to meet the needs of students. This position is typically a 100% on campus position; however, there may be occasions where the incumbent is able to work in a remote environment actively and productively. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works near video display. The employee occasionally works in evenings or on weekends. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
