Department Overview

 

Substation Engineering is an integral part of Substation Engineering Department at Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Substation Engineering supports the Company's $1 billion capital investment in substation and transmission line projects. It is responsible for the preparation of detailed construction drawings for substations. We provide engineering expertise to upgrade, expand and replace the Company's infrastructure in the following:

  • Distribution Substations
  • Transmission Substations
  • Technical assistance on feasibility studies
  • Construction support
  • Provide valuable input in evaluating and cross-checking projects

 

Position Summary

 

As a summer intern, you will be the vital link between the company and widespread interconnection of generation and substation infrastructure to support increasing capacity demand (residential, commercial, and industrial) and system reliability improvements in California. Your role will include supporting substation projects such as equipment upgrades, capacity expansions, protection and control improvements, and reliability enhancements, while working alongside experienced engineers to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality project execution. This position provides valuable exposure to the design, construction, and operation of critical substation infrastructure.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

 

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37 

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Actively promote safe practices and conduct in accordance with the Corporate Safety policy.
  • Accomplish the department goal of zero injuries & avoidable auto incidents.
  • Foster teamwork, innovation and embrace new approaches to accomplish our work more efficiently and effectively.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality design products on budget and on time.
  • Support other team members in Transmission and Distribution Substation designs using Substation software for indoor equipment (SCADA, relays, meters, batteries, annunciators, metal clad switchgear, etc.) and outdoor equipment (open air bus structures, support structures, circuit breakers, transformers, disconnect switches, etc.).
  • Work with and learn from other departments involved in Substations such as Maintenance, Construction, Asset Strategy, Distribution Planning, Standards, Protection, Automation, etc.
  • Support other team members in creating/updating drawings like single line diagrams, AC & DC schematics, indoor & outdoor arrangements, control room layouts, station service, circuit & conduit schedules.
  • This position is a hybrid position and will be required to show up in office at the discretion of the hiring leader. Travel is expected 10% of the time within the PG&E Service Territory.

 

The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above working with a team of experienced engineers. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Substation Engineering organization through the work they will be performing.

 

Qualifications 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in a full-time capacity at an accredited university
  • Students must be continuing their education towards degree during and/or after the internship
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work location

 

Desired:

  • EIT or FE certification
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
