The American Association of University Women (AAUW) seeks a motivated college student or recent graduate to join our passionate Policy and Member Advocacy team for a paid fall internship. This is an exciting opportunity to support research-based advocacy efforts and gain hands-on experience advancing gender equity through federal policy and grassroots engagement.
Summary Description: AAUW’s Policy Interns will gain hands-on experience conducting policy research on federal issues related to higher education—particularly Title IX and college affordability. Their research and writing will inform letters to Congress, resources for AAUW members, and communications for social media and the website. In addition to contributing to AAUW’s research-based federal advocacy, interns will also join AAUW members on Capitol Hill twice a month for congressional visits.
The internship runs from May 2025 to August 2025 and operates in a hybrid office environment in Washington, DC. Interns are expected to work at least 20 hours a week during regular business hours (9am to 5pm ET) Monday-Thursday with Fridays off.
AAUW is firmly committed to pay equity—not only through its policy agenda but in its internal practices as well. Interns are paid $18/hour and receive a monthly stipend of $80 to help cover cell phone and internet costs, as well as up to $100 each month for transportation reimbursement. The internship is based in Washington, DC, and operates in a hybrid office environment.
Essential Duties:
· Conduct in-depth research on current and proposed legislation relevant to our work.
· Draft fact sheets, talking points, newsletter articles, and briefing materials;
· Attend coalition meetings, and provide support for internal and external meetings, including materials preparation and tasks related to meeting follow-up;
· Support the development of advocacy tools and resources for members;
· Collaborate with other departments to amplify policy programming.
· Other related activities as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Interest in women’s equity and commitment to inclusion and equity;
· Strong writing and research skills;
· Ability to manage multiple tasks, take initiative and seek direction as needed;
· Strong and demonstrated computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office suite;
· Interest in public policy, advocacy, and communications;
· Current pursuance of an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree, or recent graduate.
Compensation and Location
Interns are paid $18/hour and be eligible for reimbursement of up to $100 each month for transportation expenses. In addition, AAUW provides interns with a stipend in the amount of $80 each month for cell phone and internet costs.
The internship operates in a hybrid office environment with two days per week in the Washington, DC, office.
