About The Role
The Library Aide Intern supports daily library operations while gaining hands-on experience in library services, information organization, and patron assistance. This position provides practical exposure to a customer-focused, educational environment and contributes to creating a welcoming and engaging space for the community.
Working under the supervision of the Library Coordinator, the intern assists with circulation, organization, programming, and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
Library Operations
- Assist patrons with basic questions, directions, and use of library resources
- Check materials in and out using the library circulation system
- Shelve, organize, and maintain books and materials according to library standards
- Prepare materials for circulation, including labeling and processing
- Support staff with clerical and administrative tasks
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming library environment
- Follow library policies, procedures, and confidentiality guidelines
Program Support & Community Engagement
- Assist with planning and facilitating library programs and events
- Support community engagement activities such as children's programs, summer camps, and after-school events
- Help promote programs and encourage community participation
- Social Media - posting and creating content
General Support
- Assist with special projects and events as assigned
- Provide excellent customer service and promote a positive experience for all patrons
- Support interdepartmental coordination with Planning, Finance, Administration, and other City functions
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One (1) year of experience in libraries, education, community programming, or a related field
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Basic knowledge of library operations, circulation, and organization of materials
- Understanding of customer service principles and effective communication
- Ability to assist with children's programs and community activities
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to use computers and basic software (Microsoft Office, library systems)
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with staff and community partners
- Ability to communicate effectively with patrons of all ages
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in library science, education, or community programming
- Experience working with children, youth programs, or public services
Compensation & Benefits
- Internship/part-time position not eligible for benefits
Work Environment
This position operates in a library setting with a combination of desk work and physical activity such as walking, standing, shelving materials, and lifting up to 20 pounds. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required.
