Incumbent serves as an Assistant Shift Supervisor/Corporal for the Vigo County Juvenile Justice Center, responsible for supervising assigned staff and maintaining security and order within the facility.


Examples of Duties
 
  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws by implementing effective policy to protect the lives and property of the people.
  • Supervises assigned staff, including providing orientation and training, planning delegating, and controlling work assignments, establishing specific work goals, maintaining discipline and recommending corrective action as warranted, communicating and administering personnel programs and procedures, and keeping the shift supervisor and assigned staff informed of organizational developments. 
  • Ensures Departmental compliance with Indiana Department of Corrections standards and all applicable requirements. Ensures adherence to established safety procedures and monitors work environment and use of safety equipment.
  • Oversees security of juvenile detainees and maintains interior and exterior security of detention facility.  Monitors detainee activities, conducts patrols, and maintains accurate accounting of all detainees, conducting periodic cell checks, roll calls, and head counts of detainees in assigned areas.
  • Receives and processes all new detainees, including photographing, fingerprinting, entering required information in computer, and completing required forms and intake reports, such as medical and psychiatric questionnaires. Receives and receipts money and personal property and searches detainees for weapons and contraband.
  • Performs duties of Shift Supervisor/Sergeant in his/her absence.
  • Oversees detainees in allowable activities, such as telephone calls, school, social service programs, counselling, recreation, structured leisure time, and family visitations. Oversees daily meal distribution and ensures all trays are removed from day rooms. Ensures personal hygiene of detainees and cleanliness of cell areas, accounting for all cleaning supplies and equipment issued to inmates.
  • Provides detainees with prescribed medications according to orders of physician. Follows Department procedures to ensure detainees receive proper medical attention.
  • Ensures compliance with facility rules and regulations, including recording and reporting inappropriate behavior to the chain of command or Executive Director and taking necessary action to correct any problems that arise. Properly secures and/or physically restrains violent and uncontrollable detainees as situations demand.
  • Transports and/or escorts individuals detained to various locations, such as Court, Department of Corrections (DOC), medical facilities and hospitals, appointments, long term care facilities, treatment centers, and other meetings and activities.
  • Answers telephone and receives detention visitors, including logging all calls and visitors, providing information and assistance, taking messages or directing calls/visitors to more appropriate individual or department.
  • Scanning all visitors and detainees as necessary using the body scanner. 
  • Responds to inquiries from family members, attorneys, probation officers, and members of general public regarding visitation and status of individual detainees.  However always maintaining the anonymity of the detainees. 
  • Completes all required reports and responds to detainee grievances following established chain of command procedures.
  • Maintains and updates institution logs, incident reports, daily activity reports, intake/release records, and medical records. Submits all reports and summaries of activities according to established Juvenile Center deadlines
  • Receives, sorts, inspects, and logs incoming and outgoing mail and personal items for detainees. Occasionally testifies in legal proceedings/court.
  • Attends seminars, computer based training, and in-service training as required. Occasionally responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

Typical Qualifications
 
  • High school diploma or GED. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Documents and logs all activities of the detainees during assignment noting pertinent information for subsequent shifts. 
  • Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications and training, including, but not limited to, First Responder/CPR certification, and taser, chemical spray, and defense tactics/Handle with Care training.
  • Ability to meet all Juvenile Center hiring requirements, including passage of a written exam and a drug test.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of the customary practices, procedures, rules, and regulations of the Juvenile Center and to take authoritative action as situations demand.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to use all assigned Juvenile Center equipment and weapons, including computer, calculator, radio, camera, fingerprint equipment, drug/narcotic identification kit, handgun, taser, handcuffs, restraints, security panels, video monitoring, and fire suppression devices.
  • Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and ability to complete required reports within Juvenile deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of universal health precautions and bloodborne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge to protect oneself against infection.
  • Working knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, procedures, and limitations and ability to speak clearly and distinctly, hear and be understood when communicating in person, by radio, or by telephone.
  • Ability to establish and implement Juvenile Center policies, directives, and general orders. Ability to appropriately receive, maintain, and account for detainee articles received.
  • Ability to supervise personnel, including making work assignments, providing orientation and training for new subordinates, establishing goals/standards, reviewing reports of subordinate personnel, informing staff of organizational developments, and initiating disciplinary procedures as warranted.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, Juvenile Center superiors, other law enforcement agencies, DOC, Courts, inmates, and members of the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Juvenile Center information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and Juvenile Center policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with hostile/violent persons.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to compile, compare, analyze and evaluate data, make determinations, and take action based on data analysis.
  • Ability to count/make simple arithmetic additions/subtractions.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of people/locations, plan/coordinate work assignments, and utilize good judgment in extreme and uncommon situations.

  • Ability to deal swiftly, rationally, and decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations, and take authoritative action applying appropriate discretion and common sense.

  • Ability to occasionally work extended or irregular hours, evenings, and/or weekends and occasionally travel out of town for training and prisoner transports, sometimes overnight.
  • Ability to occasionally respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis. Possession of a valid driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.

Incumbent performs duties according to established Juvenile Center policies and procedures, making independent decisions and taking authoritative action in response to situational demands. Work priorities and schedules are primarily determined by supervisor. Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures, with incumbent referring to supervisor for unusual or unprecedented matters. Incumbent receives indirect or occasional supervision and has a moderate degree of flexibility in the job. Decisions are always determined by specific instructions or existing, well-established policies and procedures. Errors in work are primarily detected or prevented through prior instructions from supervisor and procedural safeguards. Undetected errors could result in endangerment to self/others and/or inconvenience to other agencies or the public.
 
Personal Work Relationships:
 
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, Juvenile Center superiors, other law enforcement agencies, DOC, Courts, inmates, and members of the public for purposes of exchanging information, maintaining cooperative work relationships, supervising personnel, and resolving problems.
 
Incumbent reports directly to Shift Supervisor/Sergeant.
 
Physical Effort and Work Environment: 
 
Incumbent performs duties in a correctional setting and is regularly exposed to hazards and violence associated with detention centers. Regular duties involve sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, walking up/down flights of stairs, physically restraining violent individuals, working in confined spaces, lifting/carrying objects weighing 25-50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color/depth perception, keyboarding, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, and speaking clearly.  Protective equipment/gear must be worn according to Juvenile Center policy.
 
Incumbent occasionally works extended or irregular hours, evenings, and/or weekends, and occasionally travels out of town for detainee transports and/or training, sometimes overnight. Incumbent occasionally responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
