Compensation — Varies based on education level
Enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in a college or university: $19.57/hour
Enrolled as a junior or senior in a college or university: $21.17/hour
Enrolled in a graduate program: $24.77/hour

The City of Hillsboro is accepting applications for an Arts Education Intern position for the Walters Cultural Art Center (WCAC). The Arts Education Intern will work directly with staff and the community in three main areas - arts education programs, community outreach and public art. A balance of independent and collaborative work in to support daily operations and long-term projects, understanding the various functions of a community arts center. This position will also be able to explore their own professional interests through research, networking and program development.


General Description of Duties

  • Supporting educators and students, helping educators set up successful education space for students including: helping set up tables, chairs, art supplies, etc; helping students with questions, encouraging students, modeling activities, assisting instructor with getting student ceramic pieces ready to be fired;

  • Assisting with 2 week, Summer Arts Camp at the Walters, August 11 - 21;

  • Photographing classes for marketing purposes;

  • Setting up outreach activities and assisting participants during summer outreach events;

  • Artwork cleaning and maintenance;

  • Public art project outreach and surveys.

  • Gallery program support - exhibits and events.


The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has a strong interest in the arts and/or education;
  • Strong communications and organizational skills;
  • Has attention to detail and is punctual;
  • Is poise, flexible, positive attitude, and is able to walk into new situations (camps vary each week, so its often a new adventure.)
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus, but not required;
  • Understanding of classroom spaces and/or art studios operations;
  • Some previous experience with ceramics, painting, drawing, music or theater are a plus but not necessary. 
  • Experience working with students with disabilities is a plus. 

The principal function of this class is to provide a learning opportunity to students interested in working in a public service field. This position can include analytical and administrative services in support of department and city-wide programs and projects related to a student's area of study. Incumbents, as assigned by position and supervisor may be responsible for performing project research and recommendations; preparing information and/or supporting documents for meetings or projects; maintaining databases; providing technical assistance; participating in community outreach; and facilitating internal and/or external customer service. This position will perform work under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor.
Examples of Essential Work

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department.
  • Receives and responds to assigned internal and external customer inquiries and information requests.  Researches, analyzes, troubleshoots, and provides information and support related to functional area of assignment under close supervision of an assigned supervisor.
  • Researches and analyzes data, information records and/or trends; prepares and completes reports, surveys; provides recommendations for improved processes and procedures.
  • Assists in implementing and administering special department projects, such as preparation of reports, performing project research and management, and project or program development.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Attends meetings, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned, including the ability to meet staff off-site at public locations (i.e. coffee shop, other City sites) for one-on-one meetings.


Acceptable Experience and Training

Must be enrolled in an educational institution (secondary or post-secondary) or have graduated within the last 3 months; and interested or studying in the Arts, Education, Community Engagement, Youth Education, Organizational Development; or closely related field; Level of education and experience needed will vary based on assignment requirements.

Preference may be given to students currently enrolled at Portland Community College in the Future Connect program.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
Depending on assignment, some positions may require:

  • Possession of a valid State Driver's License and safe driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Additional Information

Bilingual Incentive Pay Available

Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, American Sign Language, or another language spoken by more than 10% of City residents as identified by the most recent U.S. Census, may qualify for a monthly bilingual premium equal to 3% of their regular base pay, subject to successful completion of a City-administered fluency assessment.

Positions that are considered safety sensitive, including working with children, may be subject to a drug screen before being hired. The City of Hillsboro is a Drug Free Organization that tests for schedule one drugs which includes marijuana.
