Role Summary
As the Fisheries Intern, you will support applied research and data analysis that contribute to Canada’s environmental bio economy, with a focus on fisheries, sustainable seafood, and marine ecosystems. This role involves designing and delivering a consumer awareness study related to seafood and food system sustainability and analyzing environmental and consumer data to inform science based recommendations that support the responsible use of aquatic biological resources.

What You Will Be Doing
Conduct a Consumer Awareness Study
- Lead the design and execution of a consumer awareness study to support Ocean Wise’s Fisheries and Seafood initiative and to strengthen understanding of program reach within Canada’s sustainable seafood and fisheries landscape.
- Collect, manage, and analyze environmental and consumer data related to fisheries, seafood systems, and sustainability outcomes.
- Contribute to the interpretation of findings to inform evidence based environmental and conservation strategies.
- Opportunity to contribute to or co author a research publication or technical paper based on study results.
Support Scientific Analysis and Reporting
- Assist in researching, reviewing, and synthesizing scientific and technical literature related to fisheries science, marine biology, seafood sustainability, and environmental impacts of food systems.
- Support the preparation of technical reports, data summaries, partner assessments, and sustainability evaluations.
- Contribute to the development of science based recommendations that inform program strategy and decision making within Ocean Wise’s Fisheries and Seafood initiative.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree (completed or in progress) in marine science, fisheries, biology, environmental science, data science, or a related biosciences or sustainability discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in applied environmental or biological research, data analysis, or assessment of ecological or food system impacts.
- Ability to review, synthesize, and interpret scientific literature related to fisheries, marine conservation, or seafood sustainability.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present data insights clearly to non technical audiences.
- Assets include:
- Familiarity with fisheries, aquaculture, environmental sustainability, or food system science concepts.
How You Will Be Measured
- Supports the successful design and delivery of a robust, methodologically sound consumer awareness study that produces clear insights on Ocean Wise’s brand recognition, behaviour change impact, and reach within Canada’s sustainable seafood landscape.
- Produces accurate, well-organized datasets and analysis that translate complex environmental and consumer information into actionable insights for program teams.
- Contributes meaningfully to science-based outputs (ex. Technical reports, partner assessments, or publications) by effectively synthesizing fisheries, marine and sustainability research.
- Demonstrates learning and growth by applying feedback, strengthening analytical and research skills, and adding value to evidence-based decision-making within the Fisheries & Seafood team
What We Offer
This part-time, fixed-term contract position offers:
- A remote working environment, with the option to work in person in our beautiful downtown Vancouver head office
- An hourly rate, $20.00 per hour, in line with market data for not-for-profit organizations
- 4% pay in lieu of vacation

Where and How You’ll Work
This is a remote-first position with the possibility to work at our headquarters in downtown Vancouver, if desired. The standard work week for this role 15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with rare exceptions for some evening or weekend work.
