Internship
On-site
Mt. Airy, North Carolina, United States

Easterseals PORT Health is a nonprofit provider of mental health, substance use, disability, and community‑based services across North Carolina and Virginia. We are seeking a compassionate, motivated, and dedicated intern to join our Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team.

This internship offers a meaningful opportunity to learn within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team while supporting adults living with serious mental health challenges and co‑occurring substance use disorders.

What You'll Do

The Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team delivers intensive, community‑based services designed to help individuals achieve stability, independence, and improved quality of life.

As an ACT Intern, you will:

  • Participate in initial assessments and support the development of Person‑Centered Plans (PCP)
  • Observe and assist with individual and group therapy sessions
  • Collaborate with ACT team members to support treatment planning and service delivery
  • Utilize ACT‑based analytical and recovery‑oriented approaches to adjust strategies and interventions
  • Provide modeling, reinforcement, redirection, and guidance to promote independence and skill development
  • Gain exposure to crisis response, care coordination, and community‑based behavioral health services

This is a hands‑on learning experience that takes place in real‑world community settings, not a traditional office or facility environment.

How You'll Benefit

This internship is designed to be both educational and experiential. You will:

  • Apply academic knowledge in a professional behavioral health setting
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the ACT model of care
  • Develop skills in assessment, documentation, collaboration, and client engagement
  • Learn how multidisciplinary teams work together to deliver integrated, person‑centered care
  • Build experience supporting high‑need populations in community settings

What We're Looking For

To be considered, you must be:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program related to mental health, human services, psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field

Preferred skills include:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet‑based applications
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to complete assigned projects independently and on time
  • Strong commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics
  • Interest in community‑based behavioral health and recovery‑oriented care
