The overall function of this position is to apply scholastic theory and professional engineering skills to traffic engineering involving standard procedures and practices in the field and office.  This position is in the Engineering career progression group (CPG) of Engineer Intern 1 to Engineer 5 and is located in the Traffic Operations Section of District 03/Unit 002 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Engineer 6 position in 03/002.  The required minimum number of years of experience, completion of required structured training courses, and satisfactory work performance are required for incumbents to progress through the CPG.  For more information about the minimum qualifications for each level in the series, refer to the Civil Service job specifications. For more information about structured training requirements, refer to the Department's structured training policy. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or with minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.  The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

NOTE:
This is a temporary position to be utilized while the incumbent is securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Permanent status shall be denied to incumbents occupying this position.

NOTE:
Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificates are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Assists with the District’s traffic engineering studies; determining and compiling the information needed to complete studies, reviewing and analyzing the data, formulating and evaluating alternatives. 
  • Making recommendations to and writing engineering reports and/or letters.  

  • Reviews and makes recommendations for improvements to District traffic signals, traffic signing, road markings, and roadway geometrics to ensure current compliance with State and Federal regulations.

  • Designs and prepares detailed sketches, diagrams, drawings, and computer models concerning traffic signal installations and modifications, traffic signing, pavement markings, and geometrics.

  • Recommends potential projects within the district utilizing various funding sources; compiling information, doing analysis, providing and submitting stage 0’s and various engineering reports.

  • May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.

Appointment type: This vacancy is being announced as a Classified position and may be filled as a Job Appointment, Probationary, Promotional, or Detail to Special Duty appointment.

Career progression: This position participates in a Career Progression Group (CPG) and may be filled as an Engineer Intern Applicant, Engineer Intern 1, Engineer Intern 2, Engineer 3, Engineer 4, or Engineer 5. The level at which the vacancy is filled will be determined by the qualifications of the candidate selected. This position provides the opportunity to advance within this job series.
 

Compensation: These positions have a Special Entrance Rate (SER) as listed below.

Engineer Intern 1 – $26.44 hourly / $2,115.20 bi-weekly

Engineer Intern 2 – $28.29 hourly / $2,263.20 bi-weekly

Engineer 3 – $33.39 hourly / $2,671.20 bi-weekly

Engineer 4 – $36.90 hourly / $2,952.00 bi-weekly

Engineer 5 – $39.48 hourly / $3,158.40 bi-weekly

Required certification for applicants interested in qualifying for Engineer Intern 1 or 2: Engineer Intern Certificate in the state of Louisiana.

Required License for applicants interested in qualifying for Engineer 3, 4, or 5: Professional Engineer License in the state of Louisiana.
