EMT Apprenticeship

EMT Apprentices are temporary Per-Diem employees that enter into our new EMT Academy designed to train future 

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and transition them to positions as South Branch Emergency Services EMTs upon successful completion of the Academy.  

The program is open to anyone looking to pursue a new career or is just starting out. No experience is necessary.

Those candidates accepted into the EMT Academy as EMT Apprentices will participate in a 3-day-a-week classroom training environment that includes:

• Classroom instruction: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm  Wednesdays, and Thursdays with a 1 hour lunch break each day.  
• A 12-hour Ambulance Shift is to be scheduled each week
• There will be a couple of additional class times TBD
• Total of 26 compensated work hours per week
• Accepted EMT Apprentices will be paid at a rate of $19.00/hour while in class or on apprenticeship shifts on the BLS Ambulance, paid bi-weekly via direct deposit. 

In addition to classroom and apprenticeship time, the EMT Academy has significant independent study homework and quizzes.  

Upon successful completion of the EMT Academy which includes sitting for their National Registry EMT test within 2 weeks of class completion, Apprentices will be offered  part-time or full-time openings based on current openings, at a rate of $20.00/hour for a training period of up to 6 to 12 months.

Apprenticeship Candidates must be:

• eligible to legally work in the United States of America and the State of New Jersey
• 18 years of age or older
• cleared through a background check, and medical clearance, and complete a lift test

Candidates accepted into the EMT Apprenticeship Academy are pledging 2 years of service to South Branch Emergency Services upon successful certification of a NREMT. Candidates who do not complete the program successfully,  will be billed for the EMT training program cost of $2,000.00. After obtaining your EMT license if you do not fulfill the terms of the contract you will be required to reimburse SBES a prorated amount for the program. (obtaining EMT  to1st yr anniversary $2,000 and 1st yr +1 day to 2 years $1,000). If terminated without cause no payment due.

EMT Apprenticeship candidates should be able to:

• be genuinely empathetic with others.
• communicate well in spoken language, body language, and written form.
• calmly handle stressful situations and abrupt sensory stimulus
• work 12-hour shifts which include days, nights, weekends, and holidays for at least a two-year commitment 
• learn to safely operate complex equipment. 
• wear the supplied uniform shirt with candidate-provided dark navy blue EMS-style pants and protected-toe black boots with ankle support
• attend all training sessions per the current Academy's schedule
• have at least 5 hours a week in addition to academy time, to study and complete assignments
• read and write at the 10th-grade or higher level
• read a 1400+ page textbook
• use proper punctuation & capitalization, etc. 
• lift 51-125 pounds alone, up to 250 pounds with a partner
• physically kneel on the floor for prolonged periods of time; squat to pick up items; climb stairs easily; sit on the floor, and get up off the floor without assistance. 
• have a primary healthcare provider and the ability to get a medical screening and immunizations prior to the start of the course I am interested in 
• Immunizations include at a minimum Covid-19, Current year Flu, HEP-B
• be able to take an online course using technology such as a laptop or tablet
• have access to a computer with a webcam and microphone that works and access to reliable internet
