Archives Assistant (Summer Work Term)

The Archives of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth are seeking a motivated student for a stimulating summer position in the field of documentary heritage.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Process and classify archival documents, a significant portion of which are in French
  • Write an article to update and enrich the content of the archives' website
  • Participate in other archival processing and preservation tasks

This position is ideal for a full-time student enrolled in one of the following fields:

  • Information Science, Library Science, or Archival Studies
  • History
  • Religious Studies/Theology
  • Communication, Journalism
  • Sociology or other humanities disciplines

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Excellent command of French and English (spoken and written)
  • Ability to read historical cursive script fluently
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work methodically and repetitively
  • Good physical condition (ability to lift and move boxes weighing up to 23 kg)
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, particularly Word and Excel
  • In-depth knowledge and familiarity with the structures and teachings of the Catholic Church, along with a deep respect for them (being a practicing Catholic is not required).

Job Details:

  • Duration: 12 weeks full-time (35 hours per week), from June to August 2026
  • Program: This position is made possible through funding from the Canada Summer Jobs program
  • Eligibility:
    • Must have the legal right to work in Canada
    • Must be enrolled full-time
    • Must plan to resume full-time studies in Fall 2026
