Our AI Readiness Intern will support nonprofit clients in building foundational understanding, readiness, and adoption of artificial intelligence, specifically within the Microsoft Copilot ecosystem. This role is focused on research and development (R&D), client enablement, and consulting support, working alongside Account Managers and consultants to help clients move from AI curiosity to practical, responsible use.
The intern will support 2–3 nonprofit clients at a time and contribute to internal learning by documenting insights, use cases, and adoption patterns. This is a hands-on, client-facing internship designed for individuals interested in AI enablement, consulting, and mission-driven technology impact. Key Responsibilities
AI Research & Development (R&D)
• Research Microsoft Copilot capabilities, updates, and best practices.
• Explore AI use cases relevant to nonprofit organizations (e.g., operations, fundraising, HR, finance, programs).
• Document findings, patterns, and lessons learned from internal and client-facing work.
• Contribute to internal playbooks, training materials, and enablement resources.
Client Training & Enablement (Microsoft Copilot)
• Support delivery of introductory Copilot training sessions for nonprofit clients.
• Assist in preparing training materials, demos, and nonprofit-relevant examples.
• Help clients understand responsible AI use, limitations, and data considerations.
• Create follow-up resources such as tip sheets, FAQs, and quick-reference guides.
AI Readiness & Needs Assessment Support
• Assist consultants and Account Managers with AI readiness assessments.
• Support discovery activities including workflow mapping and pain point identification.
• Help synthesize interview notes and assessment findings into clear summaries.
• Contribute to prioritization of AI opportunities based on impact and effort.
Roadmap & Consulting Support
• Support development of client AI roadmaps (e.g., 30/60/90-day plans).
• Assist in outlining Copilot adoption strategies and enablement sequencing.
• Help articulate AI value and ROI in nonprofit-relevant terms (time saved, capacity gained, consistency).
• Prepare documentation and visuals to support client recommendations.
Client Engagement Model
• Work in tandem with a consultant and Account Manager.
• Support 2–3 nonprofit client engagements simultaneously.
• Operate under defined governance and security guardrails.
• No unsupervised client commitments or access to sensitive client data.
This internship emphasizes responsible, ethical, and practical AI use. All work is performed under senior guidance with defined data security and governance standards.
Internship Program Logistics:
Coursework or experience related to: Information systems, Business, consulting, or operations, nonprofit or mission-driven organizations with technology adjacent experience
**This is a hybrid role, based out of our Portland, Maine office, requiring a minimum of 2-days per week in office.**

Systems Engineering has three office locations: Our Portland, Maine office is located in the heart of the Old Port in downtown Portland positioned centrally to the waterfront, trails, parks, and restaurants. Our Pineland Farms Office is located at Durham Hall on the Pineland Farms Campus, New Gloucester, Maine. Our New Hampshire office is located in the vibrant city of Nashua.
