The Kitsap Sun/kitsapsun.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a Summer Reporting Intern.The Kitsap Sun is a daily newspaper serving a community of 250,000 people in the Puget Sound region, and we pride ourselves on storytelling and innovation. Newsroom interns are expected to contribute editorially, and you will be challenged to find story ideas and explore our community during approximately 10 weeks in Bremerton, Washington. We’re seeking students who are looking for a professional-level experience and have the initiative, skills and judgment to excel. The program will include extensive one-on-one coaching and mentoring, but students are expected to handle stories independently and effectively in a deadline-driven environment. This role could include day and nighttime hours in the newsroom depending on the newsroom’s needs and your schedule. The pay rate is $18 an hour, for 40 hours per week. Responsibilities: Newsroom interns will work with the news editor and news reporters to learn and sharpen basic and advanced journalism skills, handling reporting, writing, editing, research, video production and visual journalism. Interns will participate in news meetings, where they’ll learn about how news developments take shape. Requirements: Degree-seeking student currently enrolled at a college or university. Well organized, detail-oriented, adaptable and flexible. Excellent communication skills. Access to published writing clips required as part of application assessment for all newsroom internship roles. This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
